It looks like displays on future Android phones
are about to get a whole lot more resistant to
scratches. Corning announced today that it is
working on a new type of glass for screens that
is almost as scratch-resistant as sapphire
displays (such as that on the Kyocera Brigadier,
pictured above), while retaining the durability of
its Gorilla Glass.
The announcement came during an investor
meeting today, and was reported originally by
CNET :
"We told you last year that sapphire was
great for scratch performance but didn't fare
well when dropped," Clappin, president of
Corning Glass Technologies, told the crowd
at the event. "So, we created a product that
offers the same superior damage resistance
and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with
scratch resistance that approaches
sapphire."
Corning is currently using the term "Project
Phire" for the new glass, and plans to get it out
to phone manufacturers sometime later this year.
However, it may be quite the wait, as even
Corning's latest Gorilla Glass 4 is still relatively
hard to find outside of a few devices , such as
the Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Note 4.

The new team in charge of Google Glass will
reportedly start from scratch and create a new
design for the wearable tech device. This news
comes a few weeks after Google ended public
sales of the Google Glass Explorer Edition and
appointed Nest founder and CEO Tony Fadell as
the new leader of the product team.
According to what several people "with
knowledge of Mr. Fadell's plans" told The New
York Times , he plans to create his version of
Google Glass with no ties to the old product. It
adds:
"There will be no public experimentation,"
one adviser to Mr. Fadell said. "Tony is a
product guy and he's not going to release
something until it's perfect."
The team in charge of the device at Google X
felt it was not ready to be revealed back in 2012
but Google co-founder Sergey Brin made the
decision to announce Google Glass in order to
get public feedback on its design. It would
appear that won't be the case for Fadell's
version of the product. The new Google Glass
will be ready when it's ready.
The rear case of the unannounced HTC One M9
may have been leaked in newly-posted images.
The photos come from the French website
NowhereElse , which previously posted images of
what it claims are the front and back of the
smartphone.
Assuming these new photos are not fakes, they
are the latest evidence that HTC is getting close
to revealing its next flagship smartphone and the
successor to the HTC One M8. Another recent
image leak from Phandroid may have been an
example of a "Fake ID", showing a new case but
containing the guts of a current smartphone.
HTC is scheduled to hold a press conference
March 1 in Barcelona, Spain as part of the 2015
Mobile World Congress trade show, where the
HTC One M9, and perhaps other devices, are
expected to be officially revealed.

According to a new report, Google and Twitter
have struck a deal that would provide would
enable the search giant to populate search
results for tweets the moment they are
published.
From Bloomberg :
"In the first half of this year, tweets will start
to be visible in Google's search results as
soon as they're posted, thanks to a deal
giving the Web company access to Twitter's
firehose, the stream of data generated by the
microblogging service's 284 million users,
people with knowledge of the matter said
Wednesday. Google previously had to crawl
Twitter's site for the information, which will
now come automatically from Twitter."
Bloomberg notes that this deal is similar to one
that was penned between the two companies
back in 2009, but was later abandoned in 2011.
There have been no formal announcements yet,
but if true, the deal could be mutually beneficial
by bringing added functionality to Google
searches while driving new user interaction for
Twitter.
