Stable version of VLC launches on Google Play, beta client spun off as separate app

VLC media player received a host of fixes in its
last update, but the app itself was still classified
as a beta. VideoLAN, the makers of the popular
media player, have today announced the launch
of the first stable client for VLC (v1.0.1) on
Android. The beta version is also available for
users to test out as a separate app.
Billed as the "best open source video and music
player," VLC can play most audio and video file
formats, as well as network streams and DVD
ISOs. Here's what you're getting with the latest
iteration of VLC:
VLC for Android plays most local video and
audio files, as well as network streams
(including adaptive streaming), DVD ISOs, like
the desktop version of VLC.
All formats are supported, including MKV,
MP4, AVI, MOV, Ogg, FLAC, TS, M2TS and
AAC. All codecs are included with no separate
downloads.
VLC for Android has a media library for audio
and video files, and allows to browse folders
directly.
VLC has support for multi-track audio and
subtitles. It supports auto-rotation, aspect-
ratio adjustments and gestures to control
volume, brightness and seeking.
It also includes a widget for audio control,
supports audio headsets control, cover art and
a complete audio media library.
The app is compatible with all current
smartphones, with support for older ARMv6
devices (like the Snapdragon S1-toting HTC
Salsa ) coming in a future release.
